Unlikely Allies | USA | Documentary | 95 min

Directed by Anthony Pedone

In 2003, rising music producer Weldon Angelos, who worked with stars like Snoop Dogg and 2Pac’s Outlawz, saw his career shattered after a low-level cannabis case led to a 55-year mandatory federal prison sentence. Targeted by a confidential informant in Utah, Angelos was convicted for selling $350 worth of cannabis in three transactions, which prosecutors inflated into 20 federal charges. Even the judge who imposed the sentence called it “cruel, unjust, and irrational.”

Angelos’ case became a symbol of criminal justice reform, uniting conservatives like Charles Koch and Senator Mike Lee with liberals such as Senator Cory Booker, Van Jones, and musicians like Alicia Keys and Snoop Dogg. After serving 13 years, Angelos was released following a historic bipartisan campaign. His story ignited a movement, paving the way for significant reforms, activism, and a presidential pardon.

Dr. Rashaan DeShay and Dr. Katherine Polzer (TCU - Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice) will moderate a Q&A with Director Anthony Pedone following the screening.
