FLORA

Flora is a 30-minute synchronized double-sided film installation with a shared soundtrack. It is a central component of Hubbard / Birchler’s current solo exhibition at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The film installation is conceived as two cinemas being collapsed into one and viewers are encouraged to watch each side of the screen, as there are two different stories being told at the same time, with both stories sharing the same soundtrack. One side uses a cinematic narrative style and the other side, a documentary style.

Flora is based on Hubbard / Birchler’s discoveries about the unknown American artist Flora Mayo, with whom the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti had a love affair in Paris in the 1920s.  While Giacometti is one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, Mayo’s oeuvre has been destroyed and her biography relegated to a footnote in Giacometti scholarship. Hubbard / Birchler reframe this history to bring Mayo’s compelling biography to life through a hybrid form of storytelling. Flora premiered in the 57th Venice Biennial and over the past couple of years, it has been on exhibition at museums around the world including LAMCA/ Los Angeles County Museum of Art; National Gallery of Art Osaka; Goetz Collection Munich; Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and the Giacometti Foundation Paris.
